The questions we ask should address the quest—or what matters most to the client. Chasing a number is not what matters most. What matters most is taking care of those they love, achieving the life they imagine, and leaving an honorable legacy in this world. These are true quests. Before we offer some time-tested dialogue starters, we want to first address the issue of client comfort in a conversation.

Here are some ground rules to abide by if we hope to take dialogue to a deeper level:

Don't dive deep out of the blue.

Establish context for what you're going to be asking.

Anchor the story; link the story you hear to the service you'll be delivering.
